Isla woke in a sweat, breathing heavily, patting herself down to make sure she was real. That dream was real; it had felt real, that’s for sure, yet here she was back where she had dozed off. The sun was warm against her skin, and Kallon was stood over her, wet and topless, holding a pile of fish.

‘What’s wrong? You were talking in your sleep.’

‘I-I just had a bad dream, that’s all. It was only a dream – I’m fine now.’

He put the fish down next to the fire that he was still yet to light. ‘How’s your head? Do you feel any better?’

‘Yes,’ Isla lied, for she felt awful, but she was not sure if that was because of the bump on her head or the fact that her dream had felt so real that it had scared the living daylights out of her. ‘Yes, I will be fine.’

She didn’t share what had just happened with Kallon; she didn’t want to worry him, and what could he do anyway? Whoever or whatever that was wasn’t here now; there was no point putting any more stress on him. He was already keeping himself together for her. She could see the hand-sized bruise starting to form around his neck – he must have been in quite a bit of pain himself. However, if he was, he was doing an excellent job of hiding it.

‘I hope you like fish. It was all I was able to catch.’

‘Yes, it’s okay,’ Isla replied, but she really didn’t have an appetite.

‘I’m sure she is,’ Isla replied absentmindedly. ‘I just need to go stretch my legs.’ Isla walked down to the river; she needed to be on her own and didn’t want Kallon to notice she was out of sorts, or the hand-sized mark that had appeared on her arm. She had noticed it soon after she had woken up; there was no explaining how it got there. It’s not possible. The man was gone now, the only one who could explain it, the only one who knew whose hand it belonged to. It felt like she had been cursed. What did he want? What did Isla have that he so desperately wanted? The whole scenario troubled her; it also troubled her that she’d kept it from Kallon, but either way, she didn’t want to think about it anymore. She pulled her sleeve back over her arm. Out of sight, out of mind. That’s better.

She continued walking and stopped at the turquoise waters, watching the fish swim mindlessly, wondering if they knew what life was like above water – if they too had the same problems, the same fears as she did. She looked at her own reflection. Was it her or had
